Is CSR relevant for SMEs?

There is a tendency to focus on multinational corporations in the current CSR discourse. However, CSR is highly relevant for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Indeed the thoroughly CSR driven multinational corporations of tomorrow will most likely emerge from responsible SMEs that have the opportunity to firmly place sustainability in their DNA before they grow. In the short term SMEs can benefit in a way that is similar to multinationals, by working with CSR in relation to profit, attraction and retention of employees and not least in making themselves an attractive partner for larger corporations. And the cost for SMEs of firmly integrating CSR considerations into all decisions is only a fraction of the cost for multinationals that operate in multiple cultures with a considerable number of existing employees.

A major impediment for SMEs is the limitation of financial resources. Difficulties in creating surplus to become ISO certified or living up to CSR demands from large corporations may often exclude SMEs from corporate supply chains in favour of large suppliers. GLOBAL CSR has developed an innovative approach to sustainable supply chain management that meets these challenges of SMEs. We call this approach Supply Chain Management 3.0.

GLOBAL CSR has the qualifications and insight to serve as advisor for SMEs entering the CSR arena. We recognise the need to bring SMEs into the CSR discourse, to develop solutions that are tailor-made to SMEs and to ensure that the negative impact on SMEs of current CSR approaches is reduced.
