Responsible Supply Chain Management 3.0

RSCM 3.0 is a project that has evolved from discussions in the Business Leaders Initiative on Human Rights Working Group and is currently under development by GLOBAL CSR, and the Centre for Business Innovation and Sustainability at Dalhousie University, Canada.

It aims to promote the collaboration of key actors in order to ensure, that the values of sustainable development reach the entire supply chain, including small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

A defining feature of the RSCM 3.0 is the development of geographically determined partnerships between international buyers, local state authorities, and development agencies. It actively promotes collaborative involvement of suppliers, business associations, workers’ and employers’ associations, NGOs and multilateral organizations in the endeavour.

Key objectives of RSCM 3.0 are to:

  • Build local state capacity to carry out monitoring and enforcement
  • Build capacity of suppliers to improve practices and working conditions, and meet standards and expectations that are being set; and
  • Promote collaborative partnerships between key players that:
    • Make peoples’ lives better, and
    • Create a better business environment.

In many cases regulations and standards are already in place in supplier countries and what is needed is to improve the implementation of these existing laws. As well, workers’ knowledge of their rights and the role of unions in protecting workers’ rights are important elements that are promoted and supported in the RSCM 3.0 approach.

The shift from SCM 1.0 or SCM 2.0 approaches to RSCM 3.0 presents a considerable challenge, and will not take place overnight. This project will be developed in discrete stages. In the initial stage, pilot approaches will be developed and discussions will be initiated with  a range of potential strategic  partners and collaborators.

We also aim to collaborate with a range of organisations in order to draw from their knowledge and best practices in relation to current SCM initiatives.
